Stress Reduction

WARNING-Stress is highly addictive!

Stress can make us feel important, respected, needed, and more alive. But what stress really is, is a "silent killer".

stress Stress mode is like high speed travel; even though your body is hurdling through space at several hundred kilometres an hour, once you get used to it, you feel like you are standing still. This then becomes the norm for your body and your lifestyle. And you usually don't realise this until your body finally gives in and tells you so by the symptoms of dis-ease and distress that are communicated.

It is also important to realise that stress isn’t all bad. A certain amount of stress in our lives is not only essential for survival but also keeps up alert, inspired, creative and active.

Part of our biological/genetic inheritance is our body’s capacity to adapt to our environment, which is usually a positive trait for survival. The pace of technological advances and change that has occurred in just the last 200 years has far outstripped our body's ability to adapt. Our bodies can only adapt for a limited time to prolonged stress like noise, air pollution, poor diet, lack of restful sleep, (and heck, even the inhalation of cigarette smoke) until our bodies eventually succumb to prolonged stress and start self-destructing.

Almost everyone in society experiences some kind of stress. Scientists today cannot ignore the fact that the body's overall physical condition is influenced by mental and emotional stress and that stress can harm the body and lead to serious illness.

In my clinic, I can say that nearly every client's condition is to some extent stress-related, regardless of the symptoms he or she exhibits.

I believe everyone should participate in some form of stress self-management, but I also know that many people require professional help to decrease levels of physical and emotional stress.

In our stressful society we abuse our muscles and joints with long hours of work. There are so many people that require more than self-maintenance,no different to any professional sport person, needing the likes of regular sports massage in order to continue a productive career.

Stress comes from the Latin word “stringere” which means to draw tight or to compress. Many people suffering from stress describe their feelings in this way. They feel under tremendous pressure, as if they have somehow lost the ability to cope with the demands of life.

Stress can be work-related or come from such sources as marriage difficulties, family conflicts or financial worries. More often likely, it results from a combination of pressures which are difficult to separate.

stressExtended periods in "prolonged stress mode" result in a number of stress-related complications, conditions, and diseases, such as hypertension, chronic anxiety, nervous habits, insomnia, heart disease, IBS, obesity (caused from stress eating), drug and alcohol abuse, hair loss, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, heartburn, gastric reflux, asthma, allergies, chronic viral infections, immune system disorders, breathing disorders, migraines, low back pain, nailbiting, skin picking, bruxism, premature aging.

You must realise that stress is not going to disappear from your life! Stress is a fact of life. This will explain why this program is about reduction not removal. The "fight-or-flight" reaction when it’s normal - keeps us safe and productive, and when it’s out of control it can affect our happiness, health and general well-being.

How you respond to your stress is ultimately your responsibility. Stop all attempts at manipulating your outer environment, work on refining your inner stress-coping skills, and you will succeed in handling your stress better.

Remember: some stress reactions are due to conditioned responses, these therefore can be un-conditioned. Also, it must be acknowledged that although you can stop attempts at manipulating your outer environment, it is through the food, water and air we ingust that we add more stress. The gradual chemical poisoning taking place in our body’s due to the impurities, heavy metals and other toxic chemicals in the very life giving substances we take into our body’s. Our body tells us it disharmony be exhibiting such symptoms as: inflammation, intolerance, allergies, fatigue.
